If my raft drifts towards Tokyo, I shall spend the rest of my life as an artist, but if I drift north, I will work as a scientist and give up art. |

go with the flow... In the lower part of Tone-river, there
is a bifurcation, where Tone–river separates into two parts: One branch
turns south running towards the center of Tokyo, the second branch
instead heads north, where it flows into the sea forming a delta in a
rather rural area. It is a rare phenomenon. Normally, the world of
physics tends to stable states. This bifurcation shall make the
decision between art and science in my life. At the site of the
bifurcation there must be a place, where the water separates; a spot,
where it is unpredictable, whether a drop of water will go south
into the big city or north to the delta. On a raft I will drift
towards precisely this spot on the river. If my raft drifts towards
Tokyo, I shall spend the rest of my life as an artist, but if I drift
north, I will work as a scientist and give up art. Christoph Keller, Maebashi, Japan, November 1st 2001
