Henry Art-Gallery, University of Washington, Seatle
Now Here is also Nowhere is a two-part meditation and non-linear account of how—in making artworks about ideas and intangible concepts— artists continually question and destabilize the nature of the art object.

In Other Words - The black market of translations
The operations of translation – reading, understanding, interpreting and rewriting a foreign text – can be understood as a cultural strategy to cross into other cultures. The exhibition will display a market of the foreign and otherness, inviting artists that explore the tongue of the Other and work in-between languages and cultures, penetrating, embodying and contrabanding Others’ words.

YOU HAVE BEEN THERE - departures, bifurcations
A proposition by Marie Muracciole
New York, December 13, 2011 - January 21, 2012
Go with the flow is a fragment of a personal mythology; Christoph Keller tells how he put his trust in the North-South bifurcation of a Japanese river and sought to frame the orientation of his research between science and art. In this emblematic fiction, decisions are made by “the flow” of the river and by “nature”. In Keller’s work the relation between two forms of experimentation, scientific and artistic, remains as a trace of this first bifurcation.

Æther - De la Cosmologie à la Conscience
16.2. – 7.3.2011, Espace315, Nouveau Festival du Centre Pompidou -
a project by Christoph Keller -
The aether is an elusive concept, both a classical element and a substance. In philosophy it represents the absence of absence, that is, the impossibility to conceive the void. In science it represents an element and a medium, incapable of change and subtler than light. The aether is also the fifth element, which had no qualities and per definition could never be exactly conceived nor physically proven.
However ancient its roots, the aether is, notwithstanding, the medium of modernity. Its dismissal as a scientific concept – in the aftermath of Einstein’s relativity theory – marked the moment when the natural sciences finally broke free from the pervasive occultism, which still besieged 19th century research. This territory left vacant by science was soon reoccupied by art. Thus the fall of aether corresponds to the rise of the modern scientific condition and its rational world-view, the obverse of which is the sublimatory function thereafter assigned to cultural expression. That is, the death of aether is the birth of modern art, together with all the irrational powers it unleashes.
By electing aether as its central concept, the present exhibition proposes to tackle the ambivalent relation of art and science, with art both adhering to scientific models as well as offering an experience that transcends its sheer materiality.
My first artistic-curatorial project in an institutional context - an experimental mise en scene - presenting 3 different poles of works around the elusive substance of the void.

Christoph Keller: Verbal / Nonverbal
The video Verbal/ Nonverbal shows a number of test subjects against a neutral, white background, either individually or in pairs, in the context of an experimental test protocol. Each subject seats him or herself in an office chair, breathes deeply, concentrates, each appearing somewhat nervous. Each then places a balloon to his or her lips and breathes into it; the balloon than expands and contracts with each inhalation and exhalation. Before long, something curious occurs: their faces relax noticeably. Several subjects begin laughing aloud. A few attempt to repress these outbursts of hilarity. Others appear mentally absent. Still others attempt to articulate their experiences verbally. The intensity of these emotional responses careens out of control, their hilarity is irrepressible. Their laughter is infectious, yet one observes that an element must be present which somehow enhances the potential for affect and empathy. For a moment, all of the lightness of the world seems no further away than a balloon – and yet remains nonetheless evanescent.
The video piece Verbal-Nonverbal alludes to the construction and deconstruction of the self. And yet its images do not retreat toward mental states or introspection, but instead foreground a politically legible motif in the context of a collective autoexperiment which involves the overcoming of the self and its construction of the world.

The Glass Delusion - National Glass Centre, Sunderland, UK
‘The Glass Delusion’ was the name given in the late Middle Ages and Baroque times to a form of depression. Sufferers were obsessive, compulsive, driven by irrational fears, and imagined themselves to be made of glass, hence brittle and fragile. So pervasive was the condition that it entered world literature, philosophy and history. Cervantes wrote the novel The Glass Licentiate, Descartes mentions it as a premise to his syllogism I think therefore I am, and Charles VI of France had iron ribs sewn into his clothes to protect himself from breaking. Victims allegedly traveled padded in straw and refused to sit down fearing their body weight would fracture their buttocks.

Ce Qui Vient / What Comes – Biennale d’art contemporain Rennes
What Comes, the second edition of Les Ateliers de Rennes – Biennale d’Art Contemporain, will focus on the theme of the future and the thought surrounding it, based on a proposal by Raphaële Jeune. Operating on an international level, this event connects rigorous exploratory and analytical examination of crucial issues facing our societies and their economies, with the desire to bring together some of the most pertinent artistic approaches currently employed. Numerous artists, theoreticians and actors working in this domain will be invited to construct and animate this platform of creation and reflection, whose aim is to bring to light the forms, processes and contradictions of our relationship with tomorrow.

7th Bienal do Mercosul Porto Alegre
The 7th Mercosul Biennial is an open platform of communication about the state of the more experimental and critical arts of the continent, in a dialogue with the world. For the Mercosul Biennial Foundation, this Biennial will promote actions devised to involve the public in a continuous process of approach and dialogue, making room for the Biennial’s contributions to the community to be positive and to grow with each edition. This continuous project of renewal and expansion involves a huge investment whose results are not confined to the present, but will also be perceived in the future.

Speaking Out Loud centers on the processes of both “thinking out loud” and “speaking out.” Thinking out loud describes the associative, dynamic and rather uncontrolled process of simultaneously thinking and speaking about a particular topic. We think out loud to make a suggestion, to put forward an idea or a thought rather than to make a claim. Speaking Out Loud advocates this free and creative process of thinking out loud through artworks that enable a playful and surprising experience of language. This happens in the form of what could be summarised as experimental language exercises or canny transformations and alternations of language.

Trans Rituels 2 - La Grande Arche
AFIAC / Toulouse.
- Pascal Pique & Patrick Tarres

ALL-INCLUSIVE - A TOURIST WORLD
Tourism has long since become a crucial phenomenon of today’s mobile world society. The traces left by travelers all over the Earth give evidence of a continually growing tourist industry and mark the beginning of a global movement that drastically transforms present-day man and the spaces he passes through. The exhibition “All-Inclusive. A Tourist World,” on show at the Schirn from 30 January to 4 May 2008, presents numerous works depicting and critically questioning various tourist phenomena. Documentations, parodies and defamiliarizations of traditional tourist motifs, and dream images interlink with subjects like migration, tourist industry, and global communication. The project curated by Matthias Ulrich assembles works by about 30 internationally renowned artists such as Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset, Ayse Erkmen, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Tracey Moffatt, Jonathan Monk, Santiago Sierra, and Thomas Struth.

transmediale.08 - CONSPIRE...
CONSPIRE… the transmediale exhibition, guest- curated by Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez, focuses on the strategic notion of the conspiratorial act. In poetic reference to the term's Latin roots, conspirare, the exhibition deconstructs the nature of conspiracy into a silent and cosmic act of 'collective breathing' suggesting a sharply targeted, yet anonymous and intimate form of creative collaboration.
The works and projects chosen approach the perceptive borders of our daily lives with coded instructions, exploratory maps and speculative allusions which provoke alternative views about the way in which we understand information and what we believe to be universal truths.

Hypnosis-Film-Project at GAK Bremen - Videoart Award Bremen
Christoph Keller’s works deal with (para)scientific thematic fields, which he examines with the help of artistic means and methods. For a while now, he has turned his attention to hypnosis and trance. In the Hypnosis-Film-Project, he investigates the manifold relationships between hypnosis and cinema. On the one hand, the condition of being hypnotized demonstrates methodological similarities to the natural, spontaneous situation one can experience when viewing a film in a movie theater: Perception is greatly restricted, and the concentration of consciousness is directed towards a specific object. That which the hypnotist brings about through his voice, namely the guiding of the imagination, is achieved by cinema solely through the authority of the narration. On the other hand, however, hypnosis scenes also repeatedly occur in film history. Christoph Keller has isolated these instances and combined them in a new fashion. What he has created is not only a typology of hypnosis scenes in film; rather the visual sequences are arranged in such a way as to have a hypnotizing effect upon the viewer himself.
